FOXBORO – If you’re thinking of heading to Minneapolis for the Patriots Super Bowl appearance, AAA has some pieces of advice and words of caution for you.
First and foremost, be prepared to spend big. Ticket prices for the game are running between $4,000 and $5,000. And as always, there’s a risk to trying to get into the big game.
“If you find tickets out there for less than that, you should definitely make sure you’re buying from a reputable seller or a reputable agency, because there are Super Bowl scams out there,” said Mary Mcguire, a spokeswoman for AAA Northeast.
Roundtrip flights from Boston or Providence to the Twin Cities have been checking in between $600-$1,200, and the lower fares likely include multiple connections and longer travel.
Experts say one way to save money could be to look into flying out of New York or New Jersey and flying into a different destination besides Minneapolis, such as Chicago or Milwaukee.
Milwaukee is just under a 5-hour drive from Minneapolis, while Chicago is a 6 and a half hour drive.
Those willing to consider a 22-hour, 1,400 mile drive to Minnesota could save big. AAA estimates it would cost about $355 to drive for a car that gets 20 miles to the gallon.
“That’s something to consider, but of course you have to build in the cost of meals along the way and hotel stays,” Maguire said.
Once you get to Minnesota, you may have to get creative to find lodging. Plenty of hotels are already completely booked, and many hotels are only accepting three or four night minimum stays around the Super Bowl.
AAA advises looking 25 miles or more outside the city, where rates are cheaper.
The Patriots are looking for their 6th Super Bowl title of the Tom Brady-Bill Belichick era when they play the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 52.
The Pats depart for Minneapolis on Monday.
