HYANNIS – An actor who has appeared in more than 100 films and TV shows got to make a lifelong dream come true Sunday afternoon on Cape Cod. 

Dermot Mulroney appeared as both a performer, and celebrity guest conductor at this year’s 33rd Annual Citizens Bank Pops by the Sea Concert on the Hyannis Village Green.

Nearly six decades ago, his mother’s aunt purchased a home in Orleans, and as a kid, he visited every summer.  In the late 70’s his parents purchased the property. 

Mulroney said that as a lifelong classical musician, this was a real pinnacle moment. 

He has played the cello on several movie soundtracks, including “Incredibles 2,” “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” “Star Trek: Into Darkness,” “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” and “Jurassic World.” 

Mulroney recently reunited with Julia Roberts, his co-star in “My Best Friend’s Wedding” and “August: Osage County,”, on the new Amazon TV series “Homecoming.”

“I want to thank Citizens Bank, all our sponsors. This is an amazing annual event. It’s my turn and man I am so privileged and blessed to be here with world class musicians,” said Mulroney to a cheering crowd.

This isn’t the first time Dermot has performed locally; in 2013, he and his mother Ellen, who is a theatre actress, did a staged reading of “Peter Pan’s Mother” at the Cape Rep Theater in Brewster.

Past guest conductors at the Pops have included, among others, Dr. Gregory Skomal in 2017, Blue Man Group in 2016, Jim Belushi in 2012, the Farrelly brothers in 2011, Rachael Ray in 2010, and Ray Romano in 2007.

Boston Pops Conductor Keith Lockhart said it was good to back in Hyannis.

“It is such a thrill for the Boston Pops to be here for this incredible community event. So many people, so many different walks of life all come together to hear the Boston Pops. We are thrilled to be at the center,” said Lockhart.

The show included an homage to Leonard Bernstein, who would have been 100 years old this year. 

Lockhart led the orchestra through renditions of Mambo from West Side Story and New York, New York from On the Town.

Other selections played during the concert included Mulroney’s cello solo of Carnival of the Animals and Overture to Rusian and Ludmilla, which Mulroney conducted.

The performance ended with the Pops’ take on several Beatles’ songs, including Twist and Shout and Hey Jude.

The AFCC supports and promotes the arts and culture of Cape Cod. It funds grants, fellowships, and scholarships.
