SANDWICH – The town of Sandwich will soon be advertising the former Henry T. Wing School to potential developers.
Town residents voted in May to sell or lease the Wing school to developers and ads will be placed in various trade magazines to generate interest before issuing a formal Request for Proposals.
“We know what the town would like, but we want to see what development wants and what the market will bear,” said Ralph Vitacco, the Town Planner.
Vitacco said the town expects the ads to hit trade publications in October or November with the RFP being released next spring.
Possible uses being discussed for the property include senior housing, shared office space or incubator space.
“One thing that I know for sure people want, and it was discussed in May, is that we are going to preserve the 1927 portion of the building,” Vitacco said.
The school and the surrounding Town Hall Square area are on the National Register of Historic Places.
“Hopefully we get some good proposals that are good for the marketplace and good for the town of Sandwich,” Vitacco said.
Estimated costs for the town to keep the property ranged from $6 million for demolition to $50 million for a full renovation.
