Advisory Issued After Right Whales Spotted in Local Waters

whaleNANTUCKET – Mariners traveling in the area around Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket islands are asked to be extra vigilant after a pod of right whales has been spotted in the area.

NOAA Fisheries has issued an advisory, asking mariners to reduce their speed to 10 knots in an area that includes parts of Nantucket Sound and waters south of the Islands.

“This group is actually a group of 10 right whales, which is actually a good sized group,” said NOAA Fisheries Public Affairs Officer Maggie Mooney-Seus. “Even when they disperse, people should be cautious when they’re transiting around this area. They must be gathering to feed if they’re in that big a group,” Mooney-Seus added.

There are roughly 400 of the endangered whales left in the world.

The advisory lasts until December 28.
