Aging Mayflower II Awarded Grant For Much-Needed Repairs

KA_Bourne_Mayflower_II_Cape Canal_return_58_060616PLYMOUTH, Mass. (AP) — Plimouth Plantation has received a grant for much-needed repairs for the deteriorating replica of the ship that the Pilgrims sailed to the New World.

They were awarded a $149,000 matching grant from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services to replace the rotting planking of the Mayflower II’s hull.

Plimoth Plantation announced earlier this month that the 60-year-old vessel would soon be unsafe for visitors if it isn’t restored.

The nonprofit is confident it can raise the funds to match. But even with the grant, the organization would remain about $3 million short of its fundraising goal for a full-scale restoration.

The group hopes to have the Plymouth-based Mayflower II seaworthy by 2020 for the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims’ landing.
