Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound Seeking Donations

HYANNIS – While the Cape Wind Project seems to be at a standstill, the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound is in the midst of a campaign to take the 46 square miles that’s currently leased by Cape Wind permanently off the table.

The Alliance is seeking donations to keep its legal fight going, and has already raised $1.8 million of its $2.5 million goal.

Setbacks aside at the state level, the project still holds the federal lease of 46 square miles through 2041, which opens the door for the project at some point going forward, or Cape Wind transferring the rights to another developer.

“This lease they hold is a long-term lease and a lot can change in 25 years,” said Audra Parker, President and CEO of the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound. “It’s important to end it now while we have the team and resources in place to do so.”

Cape Wind’s latest setback came in April, when the Massachusetts Energy Facility Siting Board rejected a request to extend permits for two power lines needed to connect Cape Wind’s turbines to the mainland.

Along with ending the lease, the Alliance is also looking to secure permanent protection for Nantucket Sound.
