HYANNIS – You may be on vacation this week for the Fourth of July, but a new study finds we aren’t using everything we earn.
And if you don’t use all of your vacation days each year, then you are not alone.
A study by the American Automobile Association revealed that Americans leave 662 million vacation days unused annually.
In Massachusetts, 55 percent of residents don’t use all their time off, and Boston ranks fifth among U.S. cities, as 61 percent of workers leave vacation time on the table.
While busy with life and work, the benefits of taking vacation time are shown upon your arrival back to work.
“It’s a matter of recharging your batteries and having a really good mental attitude and being more productive when you come back to work,” said Mary Maguire, AAA Northeast Director of Public and Legislative Affairs.
“The study finds that those who take regular vacation are more productive at work.”
A reason that many people don’t use all their allotted vacation time comes down to planning.
“Those who plan to take vacation and set aside time to plan end up taking them in most cases, but the study finds that only 54 percent of us plan,” Maguire said.
AAA states that you don’t have to go far to reap the benefits of vacation.
With gas prices relatively low, AAA recommends taking day trips, or even a staycation, where you can find great off-season deals to get away.
