AmeriCorps Helps to Recruit Volunteers for Regional Shelter System

BCREPCBARNSTABLE – The Barnstable County Regional Emergency Response Planning Committee and its shelter partners along with AmeriCorps Cape Cod are seeking volunteers.

AmeriCorps member Jacob Garringer says there is always a need for help when the county activates the regional shelter system.

“These volunteers will help with things like supply setup, take down, registration and other various activities within the shelters,” Garringer said. “We’ll definitely try to match up volunteers with activities and things they are comfortable and safe doing and they are interested in one of the functions of the county shelter partners they can join those.”

The county’s designated shelter partners include the American Red Cross, the Cape Cod Medical Reserve Corps and the Cape Cod Disaster Animal Response Team.

The six county regional shelters are located in Falmouth High School, Sandwich High School, Barnstable Intermediate School, Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School, Cape Cod Regional Technical High School in Harwich, and the Nauset Regional High School in Eastham.

The planning committee also works closely with Bourne, Provincetown and Nantucket to support satellite shelters in each community.

This is the first year that AmeriCorps Cape Cod members have joined with the committee to recruit members from the community to volunteer in the regional shelter system.

AmeriCorps Cape Cod has up to 32 young adults volunteer each year to work for 11 months to respond to the needs of the Cape Community. A new team of volunteers arrive on the Cape each September to assist local organizations and governments focusing on natural resources management, disaster preparedness and response, environmental education and volunteer engagement.

To volunteer for the regional shelter system contact Garringer at 508-375-6991 or at [email protected].
