Shelter From the Storm Benefit Concert Takes Place Friday Night

OSTERVILLE – Some of the finest musicians and dancers from Cape high schools are coming together for a noble cause.

The annual “Shelter from the Storm” benefit concert will take place Friday night at Cape Cod Community College’s Tilden Arts Center.

Organized by students at Cape Cod Academy, the concert has taken place for the past decade.

The academy’s Larry Brown said that it grew out of an ongoing practice.

“We have a tradition at the school.  We’ve been running benefit coffee houses for the last 32 years. We’ve probably raised between 70 and 80 thousand dollars for charities,” he said.

This year’s concert, titled “A Place at the Table”, will benefit the Faith Family Kitchen, which serves around 30 thousand meals a year to people who depend on it.  The folks who need this assistance include those who are employed, seeking work, and a large portion who are disabled.

The goal is to fund the kitchen’s food needs for the next year.

Any additional sum will go to CapeKidsMeals, which feeds children who don’t have enough food to make it through the weekend.

Brown recalls a very moving moment after the first concert.

“We did the first one for the NOAA shelter.  Someone from NOAA came backstage afterwards and said ‘look, there are gonna be people alive this time next year because of what you’ve done.  You have fed the shelter for four months,” said Brown.

The show runs from 7-9 PM, and tickets are just $10, $5 for students.
