HYANNIS – A big party is set for Main Street Hyannis tonight.

The Hyannis Main Street Business Improvement District is holding its annual fundraiser at Torino’s Restaurant. Tonight’s event is Frank Sinatra themed, with the Bart Weisman Jazz Group playing the best of ol’ blue eyes.

“Main Street, similar to Frank, has many different lives, and we think he’s a good symbol of what we want to put forth. Plus it’s a lot of fun,” said Elizabeth Wurfbain, the Executive Director of the Hyannis Main Street Business Improvement District.

This year’s event comes as Main Street is challenged by the rising homeless population downtown Hyannis.

“As a community, it’s really important to collaborate and come to the table and find common ground in order to make social change,” Wurfbain said.

The Day Center Steering Committee, which is working to find a new home and a new mission for the NOAH homeless shelter, held its first open meeting yesterday morning at Barnstable Town Hall.

According to recent statistics from the Barnstable police department, the homeless population cost the town a half million dollars. Police say their community impact department has had contact with at least 400 different homeless people over the last year.
