Annual Fundraiser to Support Marine Animal Rehabilitation Efforts

seal 8BUZZARDS BAY – A major fundraising effort is planned for later this week to support the rehabilitation of stranded marine life on Cape Cod.

The National Marine Life Center hosts their annual Mermaid Ball Friday night at 6 p.m. at the Rosebrook Event Center in Wareham. Comedian Loretta LaRoche will host the event.

The Mermaid Ball is the center’s largest fundraiser, bringing in thousands of dollars each year.

“As the last two years have shown, there is a need,” said the center’s Executive Director Kathy Zagzebski. “We are constantly having to turn animals away because we don’t have the space. There’s a need for the education programs that we offer. We are constantly turning away requests for education programs because we don’t have the people or the time.”

“This is the second record-breaking year for us with respect to rehab. We’re only more and more in demand.”

The center has taken care of over 70 animals since last year.
