Annual MLK Jr. Commemoration Planned for Sunday in Hyannis

HYANNIS  – The annual Reverend Martin Luther king Jr. Service of commemoration will take place on Sunday in Hyannis.

A silent march will be held at 2:30, starting at Barnstable Town Hall, finishing at the Federated Church on Main Street.  The service will start at 3:00.

Reverend Philomena Hare said that, although they will celebrating King’s legacy, it will not concentrate on race.

“This isn’t merely an event about what has happened in the past or racial justice.  It’s really about social and economic justice,” she said.

The Cape Cod Chapter of the NAACP and Council of churches are among the organizers.

Hare said that people of all races, backgrounds, sexual orientations,  faiths, and those who hold no religious beliefs, are the same.

“No one group is more loving, or more valued, than another.”

The service will discuss the quest for justice based on Dr. King’s statement that “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.”

A goodwill offering will go towards the NAACP’s scholarship fund.
