Annual Motorcycle Ride to Benefit Retired Police Dogs

k9_relief_fundDENNIS – An annual motorcycle ride raising funds for retired local police dogs takes place this weekend.

The Cape and Islands Police K9 Relief Fund Motorcycle Run begins Saturday morning at Patriot Square in Dennis. Riders will travel to Provincetown and will have a cookout at MacMillan Pier.

“When the dogs retire, the burden is on the officer to maintain the dog,” said event organizer Joe Ambrosini, a retired K9 handler with the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office. “They live another five years, six years, and they get to be a dog again. If you’re a K9 officer and you retire a dog, when you bring him to the vets we pay the medical bills.”

“The dogs will do more than any police officer will,” Ambrosini said. “They’ll go into a basement in the middle of the night, 3 o’clock in the morning. There’s so many things the dogs are utilized for, finding children, finding items, catching bad guys.”

The cost to participate is $20 per rider, $10 per passenger. Sign-up is between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., with the ride expected to begin at 11:30 a.m.

Following the ride, participants will be able to park their motorcycles at MacMillan Pier for the day.
