YARMOUTH – The annual Cape Cod Senior Appreciation Picnic was held Wednesday at Smuggler’s Beach in Yarmouth, bringing up to 200 senior citizens out for an afternoon of fun and and connecting with local law enforcement.
Barnstable County Sheriff Jim Cummings and Yarmouth police chief Frank Frederickson put on the event, which featured patriotic songs, a K9 unit demonstration, and a few games of bingo. The songs were sung by Dan Clarke, a retired state trooper known as “The Singing Trooper.”
“I think it goes right in line with all the other community events we do,” said Frederickson. “It’s an opportunity for us to meet the people we serve and get some feedback and let them know that we’re their safety net.”
Officials also took the opportunity to talk to seniors about protecting themselves from scammers. Members of the Massachusetts Attorney General Office’s Consumer Protection Division were in attendance.
“This is a generation that’s more trusting, so they’re more susceptible to being scammed,” said Cummings. “It was good to be able to meet with them.”
The event was paid for by the Barnstable County Deputy Sheriff Association, which supports programming for seniors across the Cape.
