Annual Polar Plunges to Raise Money for Local Charities

BARNSTABLE – A number of local organizations will ring in the New Year with annual polar plunges, with many of the events supporting charitable causes.

At Millway Beach in Barnstable, swimmers will raise money for Cape Wildlife, an organization that lost its funding earlier this year and is set to close its doors in March. The event begins at 1 p.m.

The Bass River Beach plunge in Yarmouth will support the Yarmouth Senior Center. The event begins at noon.

The 13th annual swim at Loop Beach in Cotuit will support the Deluca family of Sandwich. 19-year-old Dominic Deluca was diagnosed with leukemia earlier this year. The event is put on by the Polar Bear Club and begins at noon.

The Johnson Street polar plunge in Provincetown will benefit the AIDS Support Group. Organizers say gathering begins at noon with the swim scheduled for 1 p.m.

The annual Old Silver Beach run and dunk in Falmouth will raise money for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. A 5.6 mile run begins at 9:30, a 3 mile run starts at 10:15, and the polar plunge starts at 11 a.m.

Swimmers in Bourne will hit the water at Monument Beach at noon to support the Bourne Food Pantry.

All of the events are scheduled for Sunday.
