Annual Telethon Raises More Than $70,000 for Housing Programs

DENNIS – The Housing Assistance Corporation’s 14th annual Shelter Cape Cod Telethon raised more than $70,000 Thursday night.

All the money collected will help fund the various programs HAC runs, including several family shelters across Cape Cod.

Several organizations donated time and made appearances on the program, including the Duffy Health Center, the Veterans Outreach Center, Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Community Development Partnership.

State Representatives Sarah Peake and Randy Hunt and State Senators Vinny deMadedo and Julian Cyr also made appearances in person or on video.

On a yearly basis, HAC helps more than 200 families in their shelters.

They also provide a myriad of programs to help with rent and mortgage assistance and forums on home ownership.

HAC Chief Executive Officer Alisa Galazzi said it was impactful to see all their community partners take part in the telethon.

“We have about 200 families a year who are homeless and (we) give them the opportunity to change their lives,” she said. “We give them safe housing that they can transition into and hopefully return to stable housing.”

Several clients of the agency told dramatic stories of how their interaction with HAC helped saved their lives from addiction and homelessness.

Organizers said the onset of the bitter cold weather and snow this week helped punctuate the critical nature of their mission.

“That’s what our mission is, keep them safe, get them housed and really help them get to the next level,” said Galazzi.

Established more than 40 years ago, HAC provides emergency shelter and homelessness prevention assistance for individuals and families; administration of the largest housing subsidy program in our region; and family self-sufficiency and employment services.

The telethon was broadcast on Cape Cod Community Media Center’s channels 98 & 99.
