Another Wave of Scammers Targets Eversource Customers

EversourceBARNSTABLE – Eversource Energy has reported a new wave of scammers targeting their customers.

According to spokesman Mike Durand, many have received unsolicited, door-to-door and phone call interactions from scammers claiming to be associated with Eversource or another energy company.

He advises that, in the case of an in-person interaction, customers demand to see appropriate Eversource identification cards.

For the phone calls, Durand prescribes what he said is a very simple solution: don’t give out any personal information, even if they threaten to turn off the lights.

“We would never do that, there is always sufficient notice,” he said. “We would not tell people they need to get a pre-paid debit card.”

Durand said these scams have existed in different iterations for many years.

Unfortunately, he said, the number of reported scams has increased in that time.

To tell if a scammer is in the mix, Durand recommended customers remember that Eversource will never demand instant payment either in-person or over the phone.

Energy customers who are scheduled for disconnection due to nonpayment will receive written notice that includes information on how to maintain service, he said.

Lastly, customers can verify they are speaking with the real Eversource by asking for some basic information about their account, such as the name on the account, account address, and exact past due balance.
