DENNIS – The Association to Preserve Cape Cod has sharply denounced the recent announcement by President Donald Trump’s administration to repeal the Clean Power Plan, and replace it with a policy that will increase planet-warming carbon emissions, that contribute to climate change.
“We are going backwards to rely on a 17th century source of power that is the dirtiest fuel available in the world for no particular reason, other than the administration’s whim that it wants to do something for coal country,” said Andrew Gottlieb, APCC Executive Director.
The proposed policy change by the Environmental Protection Agency calls for individual states to be allowed to adopt their own rules for regulating emissions from coal-fired power plants, which produce the dirtiest emissions and the most greenhouse gases.
This reversal in efforts by the EPA to regulate and reduce carbon pollution is, according to projections by some climate analysts, expected to result in up to 12 times more emissions of greenhouse gas over the next decade.
“We are turning our back on all the known science about the dirty effects of coal, both in terms of contributing heavily to climate change gasses, but also by the administration’s own admission, a dirtier fuel that is going to result in more pre-mature deaths a year, due to the particulate matter that will enter the atmosphere, and will contribute to low-level ground pollution,” added Gottlieb.
In January of this year, the APCC sent a letter to then-EPA administrator Scott Pruitt voicing strong opposition to the proposed repeal of the Clean Power Plan.
In the letter, APCC laid out the ramifications to Cape Cod of reversing course on a commitment by the U.S. to reduce carbon emissions and slow the impacts of climate change.
