WOODS HOLE – A state hearing on objections surrounding the Steamship Authority’s terminal reconstruction project was recently moved up two months, from March to early January.
The Steamship Authority had requested an expedited hearing, citing the need to begin the bidding process to keep the construction timeline, which is slated to begin in early 2018, on schedule.
“We’re not going to be able to issue an invitation for bids for the marine work until we have all of the permits and licenses we need for the project,” said Wayne Lamson, Steamship Authority General Manager. “We’re hoping we can resolve these remaining issues with the petitioners.”
When the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection issued a preliminary waterway license in September, and an appeal was filed on behalf of 13 Falmouth residents who oppose the state agency’s decision and are seeking an amendment to the license to limit traffic to the terminal and allow for better public access to the site.
The terminal reconstruction project will involve several phases, with the bulk of the work occurring during the off-season, and will include rebuilding and realigning the three boat slips, as well as relocating administrative offices.
The appeal hearing will take place on January 5, 2017.
