Applications Available for Affordable Homeownership in Brewster, Wellfleet

YARMOUTH PORT – Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod says applications for affordable homeownership are now available, and applicants are urged to attend one of the information sessions still being offered to prospective buyers.

Eight homes will be built in the Town of Brewster and two in Wellfleet. House sizes include two 2-bedroom houses and six 3-bedroom houses in Brewster; one 2-bedroom home and one 3-bedroom home in Wellfleet.

“Applications are quite readily available with a hard deadline for us to receive the complete application by March 22 back here at the Habitat office,” said Habitat of Cape Cod Executive Director Vikki Goldsmith.

“Basically the application process does take several months for us to screen the applications and then at the end of the process do a blind drawing for the successful, qualified applicants.”

Applicants are urged to attend one of the remaining scheduled information workshops for prospective buyers, where applications will also be available.

The Brewster Public Library will host two more workshops, one scheduled for Saturday, February 2 at 10:30 a.m. and on March 7 at 6:00 p.m.

Workshops will be held at the Wellfleet Public Library on February 9 at 10:15 a.m. and March 12 at 11:30 a.m.

The Habitat for Humanity headquarters in Yarmouth Port will hold four more information workshops on February 7 at 5:30 p.m., February 19 at noon, March 5 at 6:00 p.m., and March 14 at noon.

Applicant households must be income eligible with a maximum of 60-percent of the area median income by household size for some homes, which is currently $51,720 for a family of 4, for example; and at 65-percent for other homes, such as $56,030 for a family of 4.

Applicant households must also be willing to commit multiple hours of sweat equity to building the home and have a housing need.

“There’s a sweat-equity obligation before purchasing the home, and that involves between 250 and 500 hours of sweat equity, depending on if it’s a one-adult or two-adult household,” Goldsmith explained.

“Most of that is in helping with construction – working side by side with the community volunteers and helping to build your own home and that of your neighbors.”

The monthly housing payment – which includes mortgage, taxes, insurance, and home owner association fees – for these homes is estimated to be around $670- $750 per month depending on cost of taxes, insurance, and other terms.

The deadline to submit applications is March 22.
