Applications Being Accepted For Three Habitat Homes in Dennis

DENNIS – Habitat for Humanity Cape Cod held the first of five applicant information meetings Tuesday night regarding three houses to be built in Dennis.

Although attending one of the meetings is not mandatory, it is highly recommended.

Executive Director Vikki Goldsmith said the sessions provide important information.

“We’ll give a brief presentation about filling out the application.  Also, what kind of documentation is required, what our eligibility requirements are, and any questions about the homes,” she said.

Some of the eligibility requirements are being, in critical need of year round affordable housing, able to make monthly payments of $510 to $650 a month, unable to qualify for a mortgage and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

With some exceptions, the applicant must be a first home buyer.  Income eligibility varies by family size and number of bedrooms.

“It’s a great opportunity for someone who has stability of income, is willing to work hard to build their home and is ready to make that move to home ownership,” said Goldsmith.

Helping to build the home is known as sweat equity.  This requires 250 hours per adult, up to 500 hours, with most people working just one day per week.  A percentage of those hours can be handled by family or friends.  Typically it takes 9-11 months to build a home.
