YARMOUTH – Construction crews continue to work on a new affordable housing complex in Yarmouth and applications are being accepted for a spring lottery.

Yarmouth Commons is a 69-unit development located at the former Cavalier Motor Lodge property on Route 28 in South Yarmouth and will include one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments.

The apartments will be spread across three residential buildings with an expansive common green space.

The complex will also include a fitness center, leasing office, playground, and community center.

“To be part of the lottery you have to apply. You have to document your income. You have to document your need for the unit,” said Mary Waygan, the affordable housing coordinator for Yarmouth’s Community Develop office. “There is also a local preference so when you are making out the application make sure you answer every single question because that can help you in the lottery.”

Applications can be found at town hall, town libraries, the Yarmouth Senior Center and Yarmouth Housing Authority. They are also available at Village Green in Barnstable, Housing Assistance Corporation in Hyannis and at Maloney Properties in Wellesley. Applications can also be downloaded from yarmouthcommons.com.

The deadline to apply is May 17 at 5 p.m.

Informational meetings will be held at Yarmouth Town Hall on April 16 from 5 to 8 p.m. and April 29 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Applicants will be selected through a lottery on May 22.

The project has garnered a significant amount of interest from potential renters.

“We’ve already seen people coming into town hall grabbing these applications,” Waygan said. “We have already given out dozens of applications.”

Waygan said the development will serve the community well.

“It is a great project where you have economic development married with affordable housing,” she said.

Waygan hopes the development will spur other redevelopment in the area.

The 69 units at Yarmouth Commons will increase the amount of affordable housing in the town to over 5 percent.

“It got us 50 percent of the way to our goal of 10 percent,” Waygan said.
