Approaching Contract Deadline, Canal Plant Workers Authorize Strike

unionSANDWICH – Workers at the power plant on the canal in Sandwich are ready to strike if they cannot come to a contract agreement with the plant’s owner, NRG Energy.

In a rare unanimous vote, all 26 workers voted to authorize the strike.

“I can’t recall seeing it in any strike authorization votes that we’ve had, and I’ve been a full-time officer since 2002 at this local,” said Local 369 President Dan Hurley.

Hurley said the sides are not close to an agreement at this point, and cites working conditions as one of the major issues in the negotiation. “It’s almost like a modern day sweatshop,” Hurley said.

Concerns over safety and health care costs are among other major contractual issues.
