WASHINGTON – A Martha’s Vineyard 5th grader is in Washington this week to compete in the annual Scripps National Spelling Bee.
11-year-old Jasper Ralph of Aquinnah, a student at the West Tisbury School, won the Martha’s Vineyard Schools spelling bee in March, punching a ticket to the national tournament.
The winning word was “fatigue.”
Ralph is one of seven students from Massachusetts and will be one of 519 participants at this week’s tournament.
Preliminary rounds are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, with the finals set for Thursday.
According to the Scripps National Spelling Bee website, Ralph’s favorite book is Charlotte’s Web.
