Army Corps Awards $10.5 Million Contract to Repair Nantucket Jetties

nantucket harborNANTUCKET – The Army Corps of Engineers awarded a $10.5 million contract last week to repair the east and west jetties in Nantucket Harbor.

The jetties, which extend into Nantucket Sound, were damaged during Hurricane Sandy in 2012, according to Army Corps Spokesman Tim Dugan.

Dugan says the work will begin before the end of the year.

“Construction is scheduled to start on or about December 1 this year and take approximately 10 to 12 months to complete,” he said.

To repair the jetties, 32,300 tons of armor stone, in two to four ton pieces, will be delivered and installed.

“It’s some pretty heavy weather out there,” Dugan said. “But we hope to repair them and keep them in pretty good shape.”

The jetties are about a mile long.
