Army Corps: Downed Light Pole on Sagamore Bridge Was Corroded

BOURNE – The light pole that came crashing down on the Sagamore Bridge on Christmas Day was corroded, according to the Army Corps of Engineers.

Spokesman Tim Dugan says the steel base that connected the pole to the bridge was faulty, leading to the failure of the light structure.

Crews inspected all the poles on the bridge on Christmas and will conduct another inspection this week. Similar light poles on the Bourne Bridge will also undergo a review.

Some lane restrictions may be possible while the inspections are underway. The Corps says they will do the work outside of rush hour and say they don’t anticipate any major traffic delays.

The Bourne and Sagamore Bridges were built and opened in the 1930’s. The Corps is in the middle of a three-year study examining the future of the bridges.
