CHATHAM – The US Army Corps of Engineers is working to determine if the entrance channel to Stage Harbor in Chatham is needed this summer.
The Corps will conduct a hydrographic survey to see if the dredging is required.
The Federal Navigation Project provides an entrance channel 150 feet wide and 10 feet deep. The harbor shoals every three to four years which requires dredging maintenance.
Previous dredging work was performed in 2009, 2010 and 2014.
Funding for the work has been secured for fiscal year 2016 and if proper permits are obtained the dredging could be completed this summer.
Usually 40,000 to 60,000 cubic yards of clean sand is removed from the channel with the work taking two to three months to complete. The dredged material would be placed at one or multiple sites at Harding Beach.
