Army Corps: Sagamore Bridge Work Ahead of Schedule, 60 Percent Complete

SAGAMORE – The Army Corps of Engineers has once again reported that the Sagamore Bridge work project is ahead of schedule, fueling hopes that the lane restrictions could be lifted earlier than anticipated.

The contractor began the third and final phase of the project two and a half weeks earlier than forecast and the Corps says that work is expected to take about two weeks.

Officials estimate about 60 percent of the project is already complete.

Construction was initially scheduled to end on May 23. Corps officials have not specified a new end date.

During this period of time, the sidewalk on the bridge will be closed down. Pedestrians or bicyclists will need to use the Bourne Bridge or use public transportation, ride sharing, or vehicle for hire services to cross the canal.
Crews have been repairing damaged roadway joints since early April.

The project has resulted in the 24/7 closure of one lane on each side of the bridge, causing significant traffic problems on a daily basis.

A similar project is planned for the Bourne Bridge in the fall.
