BARNSTABLE – In 1948, a group of Cape Cod artists wanted to open an art gallery for exhibits, classes, and get togethers. Due to their efforts, The Cape Cod Art Association was born.
Although it is now called the Cape Cod Art Center, it is still going strong 70 years later.
Executive Director Roberta Miller explains the impetus that brought it to life. “These artists felt lonely. They were out on their own and there was no comradery of artists working together. So they got together and incorporated the Cape Cod Art Association. It was based in Hyannis at the time.” It is now located on Route 6A in Barnstable.
As part of their 70th anniversary celebration, they are presenting five exhibits showcasing their history. In addition, there are several special exhibits and events.
Miller points out that membership has its privileges. “We serve our members by educating them, providing opportunities and by teaching them marketing skills such as having websites and how to do social media.”
The center currently has just under one thousand members of which 85% are from the Cape. They present 144 classes each year along with 48 workshops.
