ORLEANS – The show will not go on for the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra this summer at Eldredge Park in Orleans.

The annual Pops in the Park concert was canceled by the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod. The organization’s executive director Julie Wake said the decision was made for financial reasons.

“It was a decision done by committee and by looking at the numbers,” said Wake.

The cancelation marks the first time the concert will not be held in almost 30 years. The Arts Foundation had produced the event for the last three years after taking it over from the Orleans Chamber of Commerce.

“With our small staff and kind of our transition into really focusing on our foundation work we just had to take a pause on it this year,” Wake said.

Wake said the event would require larger corporate sponsorship if it is going to be brought back in the future.

“If the community of Orleans would really like it back, I think they could probably pool resources and try to get it back together,” she said. “And the Arts Foundation would help in any way that we could.”

Wake said the event take an enormous amount of labor, time and resources to produce a concert like Pops in the Park.

She said the Arts Foundation should not be producing events and focus on supporting the local creative community.

“We would definitely help with connecting other entities that might want to produce something be it the Pops or some other cultural event,” she said. “We’d love to make that connection and help support it.”
