HYANNIS – An 8 year old boy is okay after being saved by a lifeguard after near drowning incident at a Hyannis hotel over the weekend.
Paramedics were called to the Courtyard on Marriott next to the Cape Cod Mall on Saturday after the incident. A lifeguard apparently had the boy conscious when rescue personnel arrived.
The incident comes as Barnstable’s Board of Health is taking a look at its regulations for lifeguards at semi-public pools, in other words, hotels or condominium complexes.
The town is one of only a few in Massachusetts that have lifeguard regulations for hotel pools.
At a meeting last month, the Hyannis Area Chamber of Commerce asked town officials to loosen some of the regulations and submitted a list of proposed revisions to the current rules.
The Barnstable Board of Health’s current regulations stipulate that a lifeguard or certified swimmer be on duty when a pool is open. The designation of a certified swimmer requires the ability to swim two laps, retrieve an item from the bottom of a pool, tread water for two minutes and have CPR training.
Hotels can request a variance from the board of health to be allowed to be excluded from the regulations.
Last year, two people drowned in separate incidents at the Bayside Resort in Yarmouth. 40 year old Thomas Flynn of Medford and a 9 year old girl from New York died.
