Bourne Republican Announces Run for State Senate Seat

HYANNIS – Attorney Jay McMahon is jumping into the race for Plymouth/Barnstable State Senate.

McMahon, a Republican, is running as a self-described “fiscal watchdog for the taxpayers,” and will be basing his campaign on fixing issues such as the opioid crisis.

“We seem to be throwing millions and millions of dollars at that problem, and yet we’re not getting the bang for the buck and we’re not getting the rehabilitation that we think we’re paying for,” McMahon said.

McMahon will also look to reform the criminal justice system. He suggested implementing more penalties for those convicted of killing police officers, similar to states with capital punishment laws such as California, Florida, and Texas.

He claims that those charged with killing officers see their standards of living rise when behind bars.

“We treat convicted cop killers in Massachusetts better than we treat the elderly,” he continued.

He will be looking to take over for Senator Vinny deMacedo, who will be stepping down from the seat to take a position at Bridgewater State University.

As the Republican nominee for Massachusetts Attorney General last year, McMahon lost to incumbent Maura Healey.

McMahon will formally announce his intention to run for the State Senate on November 19 with an event at Plymouth Rock at 2 p.m. A campaign kick-off event will be held that evening at Mezza Luna Restaurant in Buzzards Bay starting at 6 p.m.
