Atwood House and Museum Presents “Whaling in the Age of Sail”

CHATHAM – The Atwood House and Museum will be presenting speaker Curtis Martin in a discussion titled “Whaling in the Age of Sail.”

The presentation will introduce visitors to the U.S. whale fishery from the 17th to the early 20th centuries in America. He will discuss whaling’s beginnings, the ship’s crew, life aboard a vessel, and the risks associated with the one- to two-year voyages.

Martin will detail factors including the economy, the hunt, capture, and processing of whales, products of the industry, and its effect on people of the age both on and off the ships.

Attendees will also hear of the leisure arts of whale men, and finally, the decline and death of the industry in the U.S.

The “Whaling in the Age of Sail” presentation will be held at the Atwood House and Museum on Sunday, January 21^st, at 2 p.m.    The museum is located at 347 Stage Harbor Rd. in Chatham. Admission is free for members; $5 per person.
