BOSTON (AP) — A state audit has found the Massachusetts Gaming Commission did not ensure the state’s first casino was meeting its hiring goals.
Auditor Suzanne Bump released a report Monday suggesting Plainridge Park Casino has been “falling far short” of its job creation promises.
The Plainville slots parlor is required to hire 90 percent of its workforce from its host and surrounding communities, but Bump’s audit found the casino had only hired 36 percent from those communities as of June 2015.
Bump recommended the commission set hiring benchmarks and monitor their compliance.
The commission responded that the hiring goals represent an “ongoing obligation” and not one “necessarily met at a specific time.” It says it is “pleased” that 65 percent of casino workers now live within a 20-mile radius of the facility.
