Baker Administration Announces $3 Million for Coastal Resiliency Efforts

BOSTON – The Baker-Polito Administration has made $3 million available for coastal resiliency and water quality improvement efforts in the Commonwealth’s 78 coastal communities.

The money will be provided through two grant programs and requests for responses will be solicited from cities, towns, and non-profits working on coastal resiliency and coastal pollutant remediation projects.

The Coastal Resilience Grant Program helps Massachusetts coastal communities reduce the risks from flooding, erosion, sea level rise, and coastal storms. The Coastal Pollutant Remediation Grant Program provides money for the 220 cities and towns within the Massachusetts Coastal Watersheds to tackle stormwater pollution issues.

“The Commonwealth’s coastal communities continue to face the persistent challenges of climate change as they work to ensure the safety of residents and the health of critical environmental resources,” said Gov. Charlie Baker.

“Through funding opportunities to promote resilience and improve water quality, along with our Administration’s Environmental Bond Bill which makes strategic investments to better safeguard critical infrastructure and environmental assets, the Commonwealth remains committed to preparing for the impacts of climate change,” Baker added.

“This past winter underscored the profound impact that climate change has on our state, and especially our coastal communities,” said Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito. “By ensuring cities and towns along the coast have access to funding to ensure the safety of residents and infrastructure, as well as the integrity of their drinking water, our Administration has demonstrated our continued willingness to work collaboratively with municipalities to provide them with the resources necessary to prepare for the challenges ahead.”

The announcements were made last week in Gloucester as part of the state’s celebration of Earth Week.
