BUZZARDS BAY – The Buzzards Bay Coalition is in line for $35,000 in state grant funding to support a bay monitoring program.
The Baker administration announced $135,000 to support a series of water quality and land protection projects across the state.
The money means the group will be able to continue their Baywatchers program for another season. Trained volunteers test water quality at roughly 150 checkpoints in and around Buzzards Bay to compile data on the health of the body of water.
The program has been in existence for 25 years.
“Water quality improvement and monitoring is vital in our region,” said Congressman Bill Keating. “The Buzzards Bay Coalition has been a tireless leader in organizing a regional approach towards wastewater and environmental issues on the South Coast.”
The towns of Rochester, Acushnet, and Mattapoisett will also receive $35,000 to work with the Coalition on various projects.
“Our administration is pleased to help these South Coast towns protect their water, maintain their natural landscapes and improve their overall quality of life,” Gov. Baker said. “The funding being awarded today will enable important projects that protect the important natural resources in Buzzards Bay.”
