Gov. Baker Helps Cut Ribbon on New DA Office Space

Governor Charlie Baker was in Barnstable Village Wednesday to help cut the ribbon for the new Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office addition.

BARNSTABLE – Governor Charlie Baker was on Cape Cod Wednesday to help cut the ribbon on the new addition to the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s office.

Baker said it was important to upgrade the facility to allow the staff to better serve the people of Cape Cod.

Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe said the office staff was just under 30 people in 1986 and now it is up to 59.

“For years we have been trying to get into a little more space,” O’Keefe said.

The new addition will allow each assistant district attorney to have their own office space to work. In some case, three ADA’s have been sharing the same space.

“When we complete the renovation across the way every lawyer will now have their own little space to work in, and that is going to help their work product and is something they deserve as professionals,” O’Keefe said.

The addition is located next to the old building on Route 6A in Barnstable Village.

O’Keefe said it was critical for the office to stay in the village and close to district and Superior Courts, and other court facilities in the complex.

“We believe and feel that we have the support of the village and that we are important to the village,” O’Keefe said.

The new space, which will house the administration and staff who work in Superior Court, expands the total square footage for the office to 11,800 square feet from 5,500 square feet.

The District Court staff will continue to work in the old space.

During his remarks, Baker praised O’Keefe for being on the forefront of combating the addiction issue several years ago.

Baker also attended a re-election campaign fundraising event for O’Keefe Wednesday evening in Hyannis at the Resort and Conference Center.
