BOSTON – Governor Charlie Baker has nominated Attorney Jacqueline Burchill, of Cohasset, as Associate Justice of the Plymouth Probate and Family Court.
Attorney Burchill has 18 years of legal experience is currently an Associate at the firm Giarrusso, Norton, Cooley & McGlone, P.C. in Quincy, where she has focused on domestic relations and family law since 2008.
Burchill’s legal career started in 1992 as a staff attorney in Inmate Legal Services at the Suffolk County House of Correction.
She later joined the law firm of Giarrusso, Norton, Cooley & McGlone, where she worked on personal injury, environmental, criminal and domestic relations matters until 1999. From 1999 – 2002, Burchill worked in Private Client Group Sales at Mellon Private Asset Management in Boston.
“Attorney Burchill’s variety of experience with family and domestic legal matters has prepared her well for a position on the Probate and Family Court,” said Governor Baker.
“I am pleased to submit her name to the Governor’s Council for their advice and consent.”
The Probate and Family Court Department has jurisdiction over family-related and probate matters such as divorce, paternity, child support, custody, parenting time, adoption, termination of parental rights, abuse prevention and wills, estates, trusts, guardianships, conservatorships, and changes of name.
“Attorney Burchill has valuable experience with family law, having served as Guardian ad Litem, Special Master and Discovery master in the Norfolk Probate and Family Court,” said Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito.
“I am confident that, if confirmed, Attorney Burchill will serve families of the Commonwealth well.”
Judicial nominations are subject to the advice and consent of the Governor’s Council. Applicants for judicial openings are reviewed by the Judicial Nominating Commission (JNC) and recommended to the governor.
Governor Baker established the JNC in February 2015 pursuant to Executive Order 558, a non-partisan, non-political Commission composed of volunteers from a cross-section of the Commonwealth’s diverse population to screen judicial applications. Twenty-one members were later appointed to the JNC in April 2015.
Burchill earned her Bachelor of Arts cum laude from Boston University in 1989 and her Juris Doctor cum laude from Suffolk University Law School in 1992.
