Balloon Ban Proposed in Orleans

ORLEANS – The Orleans Board of Selectmen recently voted to move ahead with a public meeting regarding a proposed bylaw that would ban the sale of balloons in the town.

The proposal was brought forward by the town’s Conservation Commission, citing the potential environmental concerns due to the improper disposal and release of balloons.

“They have concerns, environmental concerns to wildlife and marine life when people improperly release or dispose of balloons,” said John Kelly, Orleans Town Administrator.

Nantucket and Chatham have similar bans already on the books.

According to the proposal, the ban would prohibit the sale of balloons that are inflated with lighter-than-air gas – including helium.

Anyone found in violation of the bylaw could face a fine up to $50.

No date has been set for the public meeting, and if the measure is approved during that meeting, it would then be up to voters at Town Meeting in the spring to officially enact the ban.
