BARNSTABLE–The Town of Barnstable’s Department of Public Works held their first of four public meetings on the recently released Draft Comprehensive Wastewater Management Plan Tuesday evening at the Barnstable County Complex.
The document was created to outline how wastewater collection, treatment, and disposal will be carried out for the next 30 years.
The town is looking to achieve multiple goals in the future, including reducing nutrient enrichment of local estuaries and fresh water ponds, as well as protecting public water supplies and stimulating economic growth.
Director of Public Works Dan Santos explained why the decision was made to schedule these information sessions.
“I think people want to understand why the particular needs are needs,” he said.
“So, our goal is to explain our rationale and our thinking.”
Barnstable officials have worked since 2015 to create a plan, and the proposed price is over $1 billion.
“While we’re not really here to address the funding of it—our position is to address the technical aspects of the project—we’ll touch a little bit about how the funding’s going to get resolved,” Santos continued.
The next event will be at the Osterville Village Library on October 21.
The next day, a hearing will be held at Barnstable Town Hall. Another session will be held at Liberty Hall Club in Marstons Mills.
