BARNSTABLE – The Barnstable Clean Water Coalition has announced upcoming volunteer opportunities for the summer.
On Monday at the BCWC office, the coalition will be hosting a Marine Invasive Monitoring Information Collaborative (MIMIC) training session. Anyone interested in looking under docks and rocks for strange-looking marine organisms are encouraged join the program.
The program will run from 10:00 a.m. through 12:00 p.m. The BCWC office is located in Osterville on 864 Main Street.
In September, the Hyannis Oyster Upweller kicks off and the coalition is growing spat-size to juvenile-sized oysters in anticipation. The coalition has an upweller tank at Gateway Marina on Hyannis Harbor.
In the program’s second year, the coalition plans to grow two batches of 50,000 oysters to come to a total of 100,000 by September. The BCWC encourages anyone interested in the importance of shell fishing to join.
Finally, the coalition is seeking volunteer help get a Shell Recycling Program up and running. The program is currently in the works between the BCWC and the Town of Barnstable Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
The DNR is hoping to collect mainly quahog and oyster shells, though softshell clam and mussel shells would be acceptable, too. Shell Recycling Bins will be placed at Scudder Lane, Cordwood, and Bridge Street during the spring and summer. The last one will move to Bay Street during oyster season.
