Barnstable Community Service Officer Program Deemed a Success

KA_Hyannis_Historic Main street sign_11315BARNSTABLE – This past summer the Barnstable Police Department unveiled a pilot program to better serve businesses, residents and visitors along Main Street, and town officials say the program was a complete success.

The program comprised of six community service officers, who wore bright-yellow shirts, and were tasked to watch for suspicious activity, safety hazards, and add another element of public safety.

“We were interacting with our public, and making sure we were keeping them safe, and also diverting the resources that needed to be diverted to those who were in need,” said Barnstable Town Manager Mark Ells.

Barnstable Police will talk with businesses, social service agencies and other stakeholders to determine where the program can improve.

The program will look to extend its coverage area and add more officers for next summer.
