Barnstable Conducting Wastewater Pilot Program

heatingBARNSTABLE – A pilot program underway in Hyannis could supplement the heating and cooling needs of several town buildings, if successful.

A Wastewater Energy Recovery unit has been installed at the Old Colony pumping station.

Wastewater Energy Recovery is a heat exchange process that takes advantage of the relatively constant temperature of wastewater for space and water heating during the winter and to dissipate excess building heat in the summer.

If the pilot program is successful, a permanent unit inside a building could improve efficiency and save money.

The pilot unit was paid for by a Wastewater Energy Recovery Assistance Program grant through the Department of Energy Resources.
