HYANNIS – The Barnstable Town Council is considering a change in policy with regard to the town’s Temporary Repair to Private Roads Program.

Currently if 50 percent of property owners on private roads elect to ask the town to repair the road and Town Council approves, the town recoups the cost through betterments from all property owners.

Assistant Barnstable Town Manager Mark Ells says that could change.

“What the modification would be is they want to move the requirement to fifty one percent. A lot of discussion has been taking place where some say if it’s only fifty percent, that’s not a majority. ”

The program has been in existence for decades, Ells says any measure to clarify the process would be welcome.  Town Council meets tonight.
