HYANNIS – The Barnstable Planning Board hosted a public information session Monday night, giving area residents the opportunity to weigh in on the town’s long-term economic goals.
A major topic at the meeting were the terms of the upcoming Hyannis Growth Incentive Zone renewal.
“The idea is that as we structure the application with the commission is to kind of get away from thinking about what are those upper level thresholds of development that we could we could handle here in downtown Hyannis,” said Elizabeth Jenkins, Barnstable’s Director of Planning and Development.
“Really think about what are the goals of the community and how are we going to reach those going forward.”
The zone was established more than a dozen years ago with the intention of simplifying regulatory burdens imposed by the Cape Cod Commission in certain areas of the Cape.
The goal of the program is to encourage targeted growth in these areas by raising development density standards and allowing for mixed-use zoning incentives.
“The idea is that were furthering the development of a compact mixed use walkable center in Cape Cod that served by existing infrastructure so it’s kind of a larger growth management strategy for the region that implemented in partnership with the town and the commission,” said Jenkins.
According to Jenkins, his marks the first time that a growth-incentive zone has been re-authorized on Cape Cod.
