COTUIT – Barnstable residents will have another option for their final resting place other than a traditional burial.

The town built a columbarium at the Mosswood Cemetery in Cotuit which provides spaces for urns that contain cremated remains.

Department of Public Works Director Dan Santos said the columbarium unit consists of 96 niches.

“They’re 12 inches by 12 inches by 11 inches deep,” he said. “And under the rules, you can place two urns to fit in each of these niches.”

The proposed cost of a columbarium niche is $1,000 along with a $150 administration fee and $200 fee for niche inurnment.

“This has become a very popular option for people for their loved ones rather than a ground burial which is the other option,” Santos said.

Santos said columbariums have become popular in cemeteries across the country and are seen frequently in military cemeteries.

The niches will also have doors that will be able to be engraved.

Construction of the columbarium was funded by the Kirkman Trust which was created in the village of Cotuit and is dedicated to the upkeep of cemeteries and libraries.
