Barnstable County Commissioner Race Still Undecided

Leo Cakounes

HARWICH – The race for Barnstable County Commissioner remained up in the air Wednesday morning as fewer than 200 votes appeared to separate the two candidates.

Republican incumbent Leo Cakounes trailed Democrat challenger Ron Bergstrom by approximately 141 votes after all 15 towns had been counted.

More than 110,000 votes were cast between the two candidates.

Cakounes said he wasn’t necessarily considering a re-count, but just wanted to ensure all the ballots had been tabulated.

“I want to make sure that everyone here in Barnstable County that did come in and vote, whether it be absentee or early voting, that they got their vote counted,” Cakounes said.

He had been leading late into the evening and early morning hours, but Bergstrom moved ahead when several reliably Democratic Outer Cape towns reported numbers.

Cakounes said if he eventually loses the race, he’ll assist Bergstrom with an orderly transition into the office.

“I just have to wait before I make the phone call and help Mr. Bergstrom with the transition into becoming a new county commissioner,” Cakounes said.

Bergstrom said he would wait to “let the dust settle” before declaring victory.

“Right now it looks like I’m ahead by a slim margin,” he said.

Bergstrom said he was grateful the final towns that appeared to put him over the top gave him a big plurality.

“That made the difference,” he said.
