BARNSTABLE – A local campaign aimed at preventing substance abuse on Cape Cod launched on Thursday.
The Barnstable County Regional Substance Abuse Council has launched the “My Choice Matters” campaign.
The year-long public media campaign is designed to demonstrate that when it comes to substance abuse, choice matters for individuals and as a community.
“It’s a call to action for people because everyone has a responsibility no matter what sector you come from, or if you’re old or young, you really have a responsibility and you have a choice in substance use,” said Barnstable County Department of Human Services Director Elizabeth Albert.
The Council has taken out print and radio advertisements in the hopes that people with substance abuse can connect to the message and contact them for help.
According to the campaign, 60 percent of teens at Cape Cod high schools choose not to drink alcohol and 70 percent of those teens choose not to smoke marijuana.
“What we’re hoping for the future is that we’re going to see this really take off and become a message that all of Cape Cod really just kind of takes under and really feels that they’re apart of,” said Program Specialist Kim Slade.
