BARNSTABLE – Barnstable County Sheriff Jim Cummings is warning Cape Codders about a fundraising scam.

The telemarketer calls on behalf of the sheriff’s office and asks for payment over the phone.

The sheriff’s office said that they do not fundraise for any organization or any program, and if they did, it would not be over the phone.

People are asked to not give away any information to anyone that they do not know or have no reason to trust.

That includes social security numbers and credit/debit card numbers.

If a call sounds legitimate, the sheriff’s office asks that people confirm a website or phone number with the caller that will enable them to call back and conduct a check of the organization.

For more information and to report a scam, call the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office.
