Barnstable County Sheriff Warns of Phone Scam

ScamBOURNE – Barnstable County Sheriff James Cummings is warning Cape Cod residents about another phone scam.

Cummings said there have been reports of people receiving phone calls from individuals falsely claiming to represent the sheriff’s office.

The callers say they can help with getting finances in order and are trying to obtain personal information including social security numbers.

Disclosing this type of information can lead to identity fraud and attempts to hack into online accounts.

Cummings recommends anyone receiving these calls to insist that the solicitor provide the organization’s name and phone number and they will be called back.

Cummings said there is even an easier way to deal with these calls.

“If you are feeling the tiniest bit uncomfortable, just hang up,” he said. “And most of all, never, ever give up information that sounds ‘suspiciously specific.’”
